Latvia introduces strengthened security regime at the border with Belarus

More than 14,000 people (including 5461 this year) have attempted to cross the border illegally since August 11, 2021.

According to the website of the Latvian Cabinet of Ministers, the strengthened security regime is introduced for six months (11.08.2023 – 10.02.2024) in Daugavpils and three municipalities of the country: Ludza, Kraslava and Augsdaugava.

It is reported that more than 14,000 people (including 5461 this year) have attempted to cross the border illegally since August 11, 2021.

According to the decision of the Latvian government, border guards will conduct increased monitoring of the Latvian-Belarusian border, while the National Armed Forces and the police will provide them with the necessary support.

Border guards and police have also been authorized to enter residential and non-residential premises and land plots to identify places where persons who have crossed the border illegally are hiding or to prevent a threat to their lives.
